If resumes had dating profiles, “job hopper” might be the most misunderstood label of all. In today’s market, frequent moves don’t automatically mean flaky; they often mean adaptable, in-demand, and self-aware.

We work with a lot of candidates who have great reasons behind job changes and solid experience, but they are often dismissed without a conversation. As the people who have the inside view, we often feel like our hiring managers are missing out on the best choices for the job.

Here’s why “jumpy” candidates deserve a second look:

  1. The market has commitment issues, not (always) the candidate

Layoffs, reorganizations, mergers, and budget cuts are so common in healthcare, and have made even top performers accidental nomads. Short stints often reflect survival skills, not poor work ethic.

  1. People who perform well get poached

High performers don’t sit quietly waiting for annual reviews…..they get recruited. Movement can be a sign of momentum, not restlessness, especially when each role shows bigger scope or impact.

  1. Leaving fast can be a feature, not a flaw

Some people recognize a bad fit early and act on it. That’s judgment, not instability. Staying miserable “for appearances” rarely produces great work.

  1. Variety builds muscle

Candidates who’ve seen multiple systems, cultures, and messes tend to ramp up faster and bring sharper solutions. Experience across environments = fewer surprises when things get messy.

  1. Patterns > moments

One short stint is a chapter, not the whole book. Look for logic in the moves, results delivered, and whether there’s a repeat of growth - not perfection.

Bottom line:

If you only swipe right on people who’ve never moved, you might miss the ones who know when to move and how to make an impact fast.

That’s why having strong recruiting partners matters—a good recruiter can connect the dots behind each move, helping clients understand the full story rather than just the timeline.  If you are a hiring manager and using a recruiter please ask them to get the full story for you! It's worth the extra step to be 100% sure that you're making the right choice rather than skip a candidate who might have been exactly what you need.
