Empowering Confidence: Why Women Need to Own Their Voice at Work and in Life.

Part II: The Confidence Gap: Understanding the Problem

The confidence gap between men and women isn’t just anecdotal — it's backed by research. Numerous studies show that women, even those in leadership or high-performing roles, are more likely to underestimate their abilities, second-guess their value, and hold themselves to higher internal standards than men.

A 2011 study by the Institute of Leadership and Management found that women were far more likely than men to report feelings of self-doubt in the workplace. Meanwhile, internal struggles like imposter syndrome (the persistent belief that you're not as competent as others perceive you to be) and perfectionism add fuel to the fire. These internal narratives often stop women from going after promotions, raising their hands in meetings, or pursuing stretch opportunities.

But this isn’t just about mindset — it’s about messaging. From an early age, girls receive social cues that reward being helpful, polite, and accommodating. Boys are encouraged to take risks, assert themselves, and explore leadership roles. These cultural scripts, reinforced by media and a lack of diverse role models, shape how women see themselves and what's "acceptable" behavior.

The result? Missed opportunities, pay gaps, and silent sacrifices. Many women won't apply for a job unless they meet 100% of the listed qualifications. They may shy away from negotiating raises or setting boundaries, fearing they’ll be labeled "difficult." Over time, these choices compound, limiting growth, visibility, and overall fulfillment.

But here’s the good news: confidence is not fixed. It can be learned, built, and strengthened like any skill.

Next week: We explore how confidence shows up—or doesn’t—at work with Nancy Jacoby. From speaking up in meetings to negotiating your worth, Part III will unpack Confidence in the Workplace with practical, real-world tips and insights from Nancy.
